Nearly 800 abuse cases against Awajún girls, many by teachers, remain unpunished in Peru

01 · What happened

Awajún women's leaders in Condorcanqui province, Amazonas, documented more than 500 reported rapes of Indigenous schoolchildren between 2010 and 2024, many by teachers. In June 2024 Education Minister Morgan Quero, who had called the abuse a 'cultural practice', admitted the state had failed through years of abandonment and impunity, and said 116 teachers had been dismissed. In February 2026 Awajún teacher and leader Rosemary Pioc told Panamericana that close to 800 cases remained unpunished, that no teachers had been sanctioned or jailed to her knowledge, that some had been transferred to other posts, and that the prosecutor's office had deactivated its victim-protection system in the province. In a 20 July 2026 statement the Indigenous federation AIDESEP said there was still no proportionate state response.
