What happened
IICSA (the Independent Inquiry into Child Sexual Abuse), a UK statutory public inquiry, published its report on the Diocese of Chichester and the response to allegations against Peter Ball on 9 May 2019. As quoted by the Religion Media Centre, it found the church 'put its own reputation above the needs of Ball's victims,' with 'a serious failure of leadership by Archbishop George Carey.' Ball, a former Bishop of Lewes and of Gloucester, accepted a police caution in 1993 and resigned as bishop but was allowed to continue officiating. In October 2015 he was jailed for 32 months for abusing 18 young men over 15 years; he died in 2019. A 2017 independent review found the church had failed to respond appropriately, and Carey was asked to give up an honorary assisting role in the Diocese of Oxford.
