Ankara Metropolitan Municipality filed a criminal complaint on 7 August 2026 (made public 31 August) against former mayor Melih Gökçek, his family and others, alleging undeclared funds were moved abroad through a Düsseldorf company, HAMAG, following reporting by journalist Murat Ağırel. The Ankara Chief Public Prosecutor's Office opened an investigation on 29 August and summoned Gökçek as a suspect for 4 September. Gökçek denies wrongdoing, says he can account for his assets, and acknowledges some of the transactions took place. Municipal lawyer Nadi Türkaslan said that, to his knowledge, none of the municipality's complaints concerning the Gökçek era had resulted in a trial, and that officials declined to authorize an investigation into an allegation that wastewater-plant loan money was not used for that purpose. The allegations have not been tested in court.
