What happened
A Utah Office of the Legislative Auditor General report released Sept. 15, 2026 reviewed election administration in Utah, Wasatch and San Juan counties and the Lieutenant Governor's office. Auditors found no significant fraud but said some clerks repeated compliance errors identified in earlier audits, for example in reviewing candidate nomination signature packets, post-election audit procedures and ballot reconciliation, and said the repeated deficiencies show the need for greater oversight of election compliance. Utah County Clerk Aaron Davidson, who lost his June primary, called the audit 'nitpicking' and said it could drive election workers away; the Lieutenant Governor's office said in its response that the audit strikes at the balance between state oversight and independently elected county officials, and described its own training and support visits to the three counties.
