What happened
On 3 April 2025 Latvia's KNAB, acting for the European Public Prosecutor's Office, searched premises and detained five suspects, including the mayor of Jekabpils, other public officials and private-company representatives. EPPO suspects the public call for tender for the over EUR 16.9 million anti-flood dam, co-funded up to 85% by the European Regional Development Fund, was manipulated to put pre-selected construction companies in a privileged position, and that building regulations were breached, possibly with substandard, overpriced materials. All suspects are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a Latvian court.
