What happened
Romania's National Anticorruption Directorate (DNA) detained Mangalia mayor Cristian Radu on 21 August 2025 and he was suspended from office the following day. On 18 December 2025 DNA prosecutors sent him to trial before the Constanta Tribunal on charges of taking bribes, money laundering and instigating bad-faith use of a company's assets, alleging he demanded and received about EUR 622,233 between 2022 and 2025 tied to urban planning documents and council decisions. Radu is presumed innocent until a court rules. Agerpres reported on 30 June 2026 that he remained under judicial control and barred from the mayor's office while a ruling on his request to change the preventive measure was sent back for retrial.
