What happened
Paraguay's Fiscalia formally charged (imputo) Jorge Britez, who led the Instituto de Prevision Social (IPS) from August 2023 to April 2026, and fellow ex-president Vicente Bataglia, plus seven others, on August 4, 2026 for alleged breach of trust. Prosecutors allege they authorized extensions and payments totaling G61 billion (about $10.2 million, per EFE) to Neighpart for modular operating rooms at the Hospital Central that, prosecutors say, could not be built for lack of planning. On August 6 Britez appeared voluntarily before a judge, who granted release under a property bond; his lawyer said the aim is to cooperate. Separately, prosecutors are investigating Britez over five allegedly rigged 2025 tenders for cleaning, fumigation, laundry and disinfection. All are presumed innocent.
