Five years after Mexico City's Metro overpass fell and killed 26, no one has gone to trial

01 · What happened

On 3 May 2021 an elevated section of Mexico City Metro Line 12 collapsed between Olivos and Tezonco stations, killing 26 people and injuring 103. The Mexico City prosecutor's office attributed the collapse mainly to construction errors such as missing or badly placed bolts and deficient welds, and charged ten former officials with negligent homicide, injuries and property damage. By the fifth anniversary in May 2026, two of the accused had died and their cases were dismissed; the other eight remained free, no one had been convicted, and no date had been set for the intermediate hearing after repeated defence amparo filings. Infobae reported that former Metro director Florencia Serranía was never investigated or called to testify.
