Over 60 died when an unpermitted Islamic school fell in East Java; no suspect named
On 29 September 2025 a four-storey building used as a prayer hall at the Al Khoziny Islamic boarding school in Buduran, Sidoarjo, East Java, collapsed during afternoon prayers, killing more than 60 people, most of them students (reported tolls range from 61 to 67). Al Jazeera reported the collapse involved an unauthorised extension, and the Ministry of Public Works said only 50 of Indonesia's more than 42,000 pesantren have a building permit. East Java Regional Police raised the case to a formal criminal investigation on 8 October 2025 but, as of late December 2025, had not named a single suspect, according to Jawa Pos. Plans to rebuild the school using the state budget drew public criticism while the legal process stalled.
