What happened
Trafford Metropolitan Borough Council's 2025-26 Council Tax Reduction Scheme counted some income twice, once when it reduced a claimant's Universal Credit and again for council-tax purposes, so two claimants who had previously paid nothing received full bills. On 19 September 2025 the High Court (LL & AU v Trafford MBC [2025] EWHC 2380 (Admin)) found the scheme irrational, discriminatory against a disabled claimant under section 15 of the Equality Act 2010 and against a carer under section 19A, adopted in breach of the public sector equality duty, and unlawfully adopted by the executive rather than the full council. The court quashed the scheme and the previous year's scheme applied instead; the council said it would accept the judgment.
