What happened
On June 3, 2026, a demolition operation destroyed homes and businesses in the Campement (Houphouët-Boigny) neighborhood of Koumassi, Abidjan. Koumassi's mayoralty said it was executing a court decision in a land dispute involving Alloui Brou Jacques, a former deputy mayor who claims about 34 hectares. On June 10, the Abidjan public prosecutor's office issued a statement denying that any court decision authorized the demolition, saying his request, which concerned only five houses, had been rejected. The Côte d'Ivoire Bar reportedly said the April 14, 2025 judgment named only six people while hundreds of residents were affected. On June 18, the Haute Autorité pour la Bonne Gouvernance published a preliminary analysis that raised questions about possible abuse of office, conflict of interest and corruption and said it could lead to a formal inquiry. In September, Abidjan District Governor Ibrahima Cissé Bacongo defended the district's urban-clearance operations generally.
