Newport school missed warning signs before a special-needs student was assaulted
On Oct. 17, 2025, a student with special needs was assaulted in the football locker room at Rogers High School in Newport; police later charged four teenagers, and the assault became public Nov. 21, 2025. An independent investigation for the Newport School Committee by former Rhode Island State Police head Col. Steven G. O'Donnell found serious systemic failures: staff ignored or minimized cultural problems, accountability was inconsistent, and warning signs existed before public disclosure but were not escalated. The committee released only an executive summary and 27 recommendations in February 2026, withholding the full report citing student privacy law. Principal Jared B. Vance was placed on leave for the rest of the school year; the district did not say whether he remained paid. The football season was cancelled. Chair James Dring said corrective actions are being taken.
