Roseland's clerk quit as state auditors found $11,500 spent with no town purpose
A special investigation report filed by the Indiana State Board of Accounts on December 31, 2025 covering 2024 found that former Roseland Clerk-Treasurer Shane Williams-Inez made more than $11,500 in purchases with no town purpose and no supporting documentation, plus $38,300 in questionable purchases. The probe began after about 20 town checks went missing in April 2024; auditors and state police also raised debit card transfers through the money-transfer service Remitly with no record of who received the funds. Williams-Inez, elected for a term through 2027, resigned in September 2024 and, the report says, never delivered requested documents. The state board asked him to repay about $10,600 and sent the report to the Indiana Attorney General and the St. Joseph County Prosecutor. He says the report reflects internal control weaknesses. No charges have been reported.
Investigators found more than $11,500 in purchases without a town purpose and lacking supporting documentation. The SBOA is now asking Williams-Inez to pay the town back.
The investigation has now been turned over to Indiana's Attorney General's office and the Saint Joseph County Prosecutor's office.
Said the report addresses internal control weaknesses rather than financial mismanagement, and some items were later documented.
No outcome recorded yet.
