What happened
At least 49 people died in protests after the December 2022 removal of Pedro Castillo. On November 27, 2023 then Attorney General Patricia Benavides filed a constitutional complaint with Congress accusing President Dina Boluarte and her prime minister of first-degree murder over the deaths; a congressional committee must review such complaints. Human Rights Watch reported that as of November 2024 nobody had been convicted of the killings, that one police officer had been ordered to trial in January 2024, and that Congress had made little if any progress on the complaint. Boluarte called the complaint a political maneuver.
