01 · What happened

Station security video released in July 2026 shows Gorham Police Chief Jimmy Willhoite grabbing Stephen Gregory of Berlin, N.H., by the throat and shoving him against a wall. Gregory said he had gone to the station on the day of Gorham's Fourth of July carnival to report a man who had earlier threatened to stab him. Town officials said Gregory was arrested that night and charged with simple assault and disorderly conduct; Gregory disputes that. Town Manager Joe Hemings placed the chief on administrative leave while the allegations are investigated. The state Department of Justice Public Integrity Unit and the Police Standards and Training Council are investigating, according to the Boston Globe; the Attorney General's office would neither confirm nor deny a matter. No outcome had been reported as of the latest coverage.
