What happened
Between October 2022 and the end of 2024, Romania's National Anticorruption Directorate (DNA) closed 75 cases, covering 54 defendants and 23 suspects, with alleged total damage of 896,312,705 lei (about 200 million euros). DNA told Europa Libera the closures followed Constitutional Court decisions and a 25 October 2022 High Court of Cassation and Justice decision (no. 67) applying shorter limitation periods retroactively. In the same period courts terminated proceedings in 236 further DNA cases; in October 2022 DNA had estimated more than 550 cases would be affected. Former ministers Darius Valcov and Elena Udrea are among those reported to have benefited.
