FOX 32 Chicago reported on May 12, 2026 that an Indiana State Board of Accounts audit questioned nearly $300,000 in spending from Lake County Sheriff Oscar Martinez Jr.'s commissary account, including food, hotel upgrades, alcohol and 43 golf outings, and recommended he reimburse the county more than $265,000 for spending that exceeded his authority. Under state law, commissary money can be used for jail operations, crime prevention, or law enforcement training. Martinez's attorneys said the golf events were for team building. Separately, FOX 32 reported that campaign finance records show Martinez's campaign spent more than $72,000 at a restaurant raided in a federal gambling investigation; he is not charged in that case.
