What happened
On September 17, 2026, Ecuador's Fiscalía General del Estado asked a specialized anti-corruption court for a date and time for a hearing to formulate charges of illicit enrichment against suspended Cuenca mayor Cristian Zamora. Primicias reports the prior investigation began after a report by the State Comptroller General (Contraloría), and that authorities raided the municipality and his home. Azuay provincial prosecutor Ximena Rojas said the case is not political persecution. Zamora, suspended for six months by the electoral tribunal in a separate matter, said he is leaving Ecuador for medical treatment. He says he enriched himself with resources family members lent each other, calls the probe persecution by the Contraloría, and says it predates his mayoralty. No charges have been formally laid and he is presumed innocent.
