What happened
On August 25, 2026, Armenia's Anti-Corruption Committee detained former President Robert Kocharyan (president April 9, 1998 to April 9, 2008), and the Prosecutor General's Office opened a criminal case against him for abuse of official power, bribery, and large-scale money laundering. The Committee alleges he used his presidential office between 1998 and 2008 to amass a family fortune through bribes and heavily discounted, illegally acquired state property. Six people were detained in total, including his son Sedrak, and proceedings were opened against nine other people, including a former defense minister and a former prime minister. These are allegations; no court has ruled on them. Kocharyan's office called the case "another assault by the authorities against President Kocharyan and his family"; his health deteriorated shortly after detention, and the Committee said it would ask a court to order pre-trial detention.
