Clark County schools flew 17 staff to Miami for $32,400 to recruit teachers and hired none
A Nevada Legislative Auditor report (LA26-14) issued Aug. 20, 2026 found the Clark County School District had weak controls over its teacher recruitment and retention spending from July 2021 to June 2024. CCSD spent about $14.6 million on recruiting and $393 million on retention but did not analyze results for 5 of 10 programs tested, covering more than $216 million. It spent more than $50,000 sending 25 staff on two recruiting trips with minimal results; KTNV and Fox5 reported a Miami trip for 17 employees cost about $32,400 and yielded no hires. Eighty-eight employees left before meeting three-year commitments tied to $4,000 relocation bonuses, with no way to recover the money, and CCSD did not seek repayment of licensure scholarships. CCSD said the spending happened under previous leadership and accepted all nine recommendations. No discipline or repayment has been reported.
Auditors warned the district's lack of safeguards increases the risk of waste and abuse.
The district reported 88 employees left early, but no recovery mechanism was in place to retrieve the funds.
Said the trips happened under previous leadership, accepted all audit recommendations and added new recruitment tracking.
