Tolleson schools chief signed off as a teacher accused of messaging a student quietly quit
On Oct. 7, 2025 the Legislature's Joint Legislative Audit Committee voted unanimously to order a special audit of the Tolleson Union High School District, which serves 14,000 students. Former principal Felipe Mandurraga testified that Superintendent Jeremy Calles allowed a teacher who shared his private Snapchat with a student and sent her a shirtless photo to resign instead of being fired and reported to authorities, and that the teacher was nearly hired by another district two weeks later. Calles told the Arizona Mirror a deputy superintendent made the decision and he signed off without knowing all the details; he denies wrongdoing. The audit also covers conflicts of interest involving Calles's private consulting business, a $25 million lease-back deal with Isaac Elementary, and a $26,000 bill the district sent a legislator for records. The Auditor General's work is due by January 2027. Calles remains superintendent.
Calles told the Mirror that a deputy superintendent of human resources made the decision to allow the teacher to resign, and that he signed off on it — even though he didn't know all the details.
Presumably, Superintendent Calles, the head of the organization, should have known about this.
There's not a copy of an image in that employee record.
