On Jan. 29, 2022, off-duty Vancouver police officer Donald Sahota was stabbed while trying to detain a fleeing robbery suspect at his Battle Ground home. Clark County sheriff's deputy Jonathan Feller arrived and shot Sahota, mistaking him for the suspect; the widow's lawsuit says Feller fired within four seconds of arriving and hit Sahota in the back. Prosecutors did not charge Feller, and the suspect, Julio Segura, was convicted of murder. Dawnese Sahota sued in January 2025, alleging negligence and failure to train. On March 11, 2026, the Clark County Council unanimously approved a $7.5 million settlement. Feller remained employed by the sheriff's office on an administrative assignment, according to OPB's 2025 report; no discipline has been reported. The county declined to comment on the case while it was pending.
