Uganda's lawyers ask a regional court to void the election, citing violence and bias

According to the Monitor (March 23, 2026), the Uganda Law Society and East African Law Society filed a petition at the East African Court of Justice in Arusha on March 16, 2026 against Uganda's Electoral Commission and Attorney General over the January 2026 general election. They allege the process contravened the East African Community Treaty, citing the unilateral appointment of the Electoral Commission, failure to reform electoral laws, disenfranchisement through voter-register irregularities, last-minute rule changes without consultation, denial of accreditation to observers, political discrimination against opposition actors, and violence targeting candidates and their agents. They seek declarations that the election failed to comply with electoral laws and democratic principles and that the results are invalid. When the article was published, neither the Attorney General nor the Electoral Commission had commented. These are the petitioners' allegations; the court had not ruled at that time.
