Uganda's army chief boasted of using an activist as a 'punching bag'; no probe followed
Eddie Mutwe, chief bodyguard of opposition leader Robert Kyagulanyi (Bobi Wine), was seized by armed men near Kampala on 27 April 2025. On 1 May the head of Uganda's armed forces, General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, the president's son, wrote on X that he had captured Mutwe, beaten him, shaved his head and was 'using him as a punching bag', before deleting the posts. When soldiers brought Mutwe to Masaka court on 5 May, Justice Minister Norbert Mao said he was visibly weak and showed signs of torture; his lawyer said he had been electrocuted, and Mutwe was charged with aggravated robbery and remained in detention at the end of 2025. The Uganda Human Rights Commission had ordered his release, and Kainerugaba demanded an apology from its chair; Amnesty International's 2025/26 report records no investigation into the torture claims.
