Amnesty International is an international human rights organization founded in London in July 1961 by Peter Benenson, Eric Baker and Seán MacBride, and headquartered in London. It states its aim as a world where everyone can exercise the rights set out in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and related treaties; it received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1977, and Agnès Callamard has been Secretary General since 2021. In the linked stories it appears as an advocate and source. It documented that police killed at least 24 people in six Nigerian states between 1 and 10 August 2024, and in a February 2026 report described torture, extortion and unlawful detention by an Imo State police anti-kidnapping unit known as Tiger Base. It has also reported on the death in Palestinian Authority custody of Nizar Banat in June 2021 and on public executions in Gaza City in October 2025.
