Louisiana will pay $4.8 million over Ronald Greene's death; feds charged no troopers
In May 2026 Louisiana officials agreed to a tentative $4.8 million settlement with the family of Ronald Greene, a Black motorist who died in 2019 after Louisiana State Police troopers used stun guns, punched and choked him during a roadside arrest after a chase. State police first said he had crashed into a tree. The deal needs approval from the Louisiana Legislature; the Union Parish Sheriff's Office will pay another $50,000. Attorney General Liz Murrill confirmed the agreement, saying it was time to end the litigation. Federal prosecutors declined in 2025 to charge the troopers. A January 2025 Justice Department finding of a statewide pattern of excessive force by State Police was later rescinded.

Last year, federal prosecutors declined to bring charges against the troopers involved in Greene's fatal arrest.
Spokesperson Capt. Russell Graham said the agency could not comment on terms because the process has not yet been finalized.
