What happened
On Jan. 13, 2026, Rep. Julia Letlow (R-La.) filed a Periodic Transaction Report with the Clerk of the House (Filing ID 20030977) listing more than 200 stock purchases and sales in a Merrill Lynch account, with transaction dates running from Oct. 23, 2024 to December 2025. The STOCK Act requires members of Congress to report such transactions within 45 days. The Gulf States Newsroom reported that the filing disclosed 210 trades that had not been reported on time, 100 of them more than a year late, with a combined reported value of $225,000 to $3,185,000 (the ranges members may report). It also reported that the late-disclosed trades included Meta and Nvidia stock bought and sold after Letlow signed a nondisclosure agreement with Laidley LLC, a Meta data center subsidiary, on June 29, 2024 for a planned Louisiana data center, and that 16 stocks were traded within two days of a July 23, 2025 House Appropriations Committee markup on which she sits. Letlow acknowledged the reports were late: she told Fox 8 in April 2026 that when it was brought to her attention that the reports were not being filed on time, she filled out the forms herself and corrected it. NOTUS reported that her office said the House Ethics Committee had been alerted and, as of its publication, had not fined her the standard $200 for a first-time violation; the reporting reviewed did not identify any fine or inquiry opened by the committee. The timing observations come from the news reporting and the outside ethics experts quoted in it, not from any official finding, and the sources reviewed show no official body alleging she traded on nonpublic information. Letlow disputes that she broke the law or traded on inside information. She told Fox 8, "I most certainly did not break federal law," and said her portfolio is managed by a third party and she does not direct trades. She declined an interview with the Gulf States Newsroom; her spokesperson, Matt Smith, said in a written statement that she had no role in directing any of her trades, including the Meta transactions, and that the NDA played no part because she was unaware the trades were happening.
