The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) is a press-freedom organization that says it has defended journalists' right to report the news safely and freely since 1981; it is based in New York. It researches and documents attacks on journalists, advocates for journalist safety and for the release of imprisoned journalists, and provides emergency assistance to journalists, with regional programs across Africa, the Americas, Asia, Europe and Central Asia, and the Middle East and North Africa. In the linked stories CPJ is the source or an advocate: it reported in February 2026 that 129 journalists and media workers were killed in 2025, 86 of them by Israeli fire; said in April 2026 that two Palestinian media workers died in Israeli custody; and joined a petition for foreign press access to Gaza and reporting on press cases in Nigeria and Ethiopia.
