Montana Constitutional Initiative CI-132, on keeping judicial elections nonpartisan, is on the Nov 3 ballot

CI-132 is a constitutional amendment placed on the ballot by citizen petition; the Secretary of State certified it Aug. 17, 2026. Per the official ballot statement, it amends the Montana Constitution to require that judicial elections remain nonpartisan, by adding a new Section 12 to Article VII stating "Judicial elections shall remain nonpartisan." A yes vote adds this requirement to the constitution; a no vote leaves the constitution unchanged (nonpartisan judicial elections would remain authorized by state statute).

A yes vote: Amends the Montana Constitution (new Article VII, Section 12) to require that judicial elections remain nonpartisan.

A no vote: The constitution is not amended; judicial elections would continue to be nonpartisan under existing state law, which the Legislature could change.

Montana Constitutional Initiative CI-133, on the initiative and referendum process, is on the Nov 3 ballot

CI-133 is a constitutional amendment placed on the ballot by citizen petition and certified Aug. 17, 2026. Per the official ballot statement, it secures the people's initiative and referendum powers as a fundamental right, requires impartial, predictable, open and timely processes for ballot issues (including approving petitions and ballot statements within 90 days and resolving qualification challenges before ballots are finalized), prohibits disqualifying petitions over minor or technical issues, lets voters withdraw their signatures, and bars using government resources to support or oppose a ballot measure. A yes vote adopts the amendment; a no vote leaves the constitution unchanged.

A yes vote: Adds the initiative and referendum power to the Montana Constitution's Declaration of Rights and imposes the process requirements described in the ballot statement.

A no vote: The constitution is not amended; the current initiative and referendum process continues under existing law.

Montana Initiative I-194, on political spending by corporations and other artificial persons, is on the Nov 3 ballot

I-194 is a proposed state law placed on the ballot by citizen petition and certified Aug. 17, 2026. Per the official ballot statement, it limits the powers of artificial persons (non-profits, trusts, partnerships, corporations, trade associations and unincorporated associations doing business in Montana) so they exclude contributing anything of value to candidate elections, supporting or opposing political parties, or supporting or opposing state or local ballot issues; violations are punished by forfeiting privileges to do business in Montana. It does not apply to news, commentary or editorial content, the state, political subdivisions, individuals, political committees or public corporations. A yes vote enacts the law; a no vote rejects it.

A yes vote: Enacts the law: artificial persons' powers would exclude political contributions and spending on candidates, parties and ballot issues, with forfeiture of business privileges for violations.

A no vote: The law is not enacted; current Montana campaign finance law continues to apply.
