Mexico's labour inspectors logged one child-labour violation in 142,951 inspections
According to the 2026 report of the ILO Committee of Experts, as reported by Mexico Business News, Mexican authorities conducted 142,951 labour inspections between 2022 and 2025 but formally recorded only one child-labour violation; the committee said the gap suggested detection or protocol deficiencies, particularly in rural and informal work. The committee also flagged that Mexico's Federal Labour Law lets minors work in family settings without defining 'light work' for under-15s, which can let exploitation pass as family help. On 21 October 2026 INEGI's National Child Labour Survey (ENTI 2025) counted 1.8 million children aged 5 to 17 in work not permitted by law, about 1 million of them in hazardous jobs and 800,000 below the minimum working age. Guerrero, Oaxaca and Puebla had the highest rates.
