Bangladesh tax official exposed by son's goat post charged over Tk5.4 crore wealth

A Dhaka court framed formal corruption charges on August 3, 2026 against Matiur Rahman, the former president of the National Board of Revenue's Customs, Excise and VAT Appellate Tribunal, who was removed from that post on June 23, 2024 after his son's social-media post about an expensive sacrificial goat purchase triggered public scrutiny of the family's wealth. The Anti-Corruption Commission's charge sheet alleges he amassed Tk5.4 crore in illegal wealth and concealed a further Tk1.27 crore in assets beyond his known income as a civil servant earning a monthly salary of about Tk78,000; he has been in custody since his January 2025 arrest.
