Turkey blocked 1,270 X accounts in one month, including journalists and Amnesty

Turkish authorities issued blocking orders for at least 1,270 X accounts in September 2026, compared with 995 for all of 2025, according to Turkish Minute; X made 1,139 of them unavailable in Turkey. Targets included journalists, academics, economists, LGBTQ+ groups and civil society organizations, among them the Evrensel newspaper, Amnesty International Turkey and the T24 news outlet. The orders followed a September 12 police operation against LGBTQ+ organizations, and the government says its measures protect children, the family and social order. Amnesty's Turkey account was withheld in Turkey under Article 8/A of Law No. 5651. Law professor Yaman Akdeniz said Article 8/A was meant for urgent cases but is increasingly used more broadly and called blocking entire accounts disproportionate.
