JDAM guidance kit for 2,000-lb MK-84 bomb
Weapon system · United States · Weapon system
The KMU-556 is the JDAM tail-kit variant built for the MK-84, the 2,000-pound general-purpose bomb. Once fitted, the bomb is guided by GPS and inertial navigation to fixed coordinates, so a one-ton bomb can be aimed at a single building in a crowded neighbourhood. Boeing makes JDAM kits in St. Louis; the US Air Force paid about $21,000 per JDAM kit in FY2021. On 7 February 2025 the State Department notified Congress of a $6.75B sale to Israel that included 13,000 KMU-556 kits for MK-84 bomb bodies, with deliveries due to begin in 2025. Two-thousand-pound bombs are among the most destructive weapons Israel has used in Gaza: the New York Times counted 208 craters at least 40 feet across in a southern Gaza area where civilians had been told to go for safety. Bellingcat notes JDAM kits that fit the MK-84 are produced only in the US.
