Detroit suspends demolition contractor Gayanga after inspector general finds it backfilled residential demolition sites with contaminated dirt
Detroit's Office of Inspector General suspended demolition contractor Gayanga Co., LLC and owner Brian McKinney in September 2025 after finding the company used unapproved backfill soil, allegedly hauled from the Northland Mall redevelopment site, at Detroit residential demolition sites; more than 80% of tested properties failed state residential contamination standards. The City Council unanimously upheld the suspension in November 2025.
