Bangladesh tribunal gives ex-police chief Mamun five years after he turned state witness; Hasina and ex-Home Minister Khan sentenced to death in absentia
On November 17, 2025 International Crimes Tribunal-1 sentenced former Inspector General of Police Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun to five years for crimes against humanity during the July 2024 uprising, citing his role as the first approver in tribunal history, while Sheikh Hasina and Asaduzzaman Khan received death sentences in absentia. Families of victims told Prothom Alo the term was too light and said they would appeal; the prosecutor in a later January 2026 verdict sought harsher terms for other officers.
