ACLU sues Pima County Sheriff's Department for withholding records on federal immigration-enforcement cooperation
The ACLU of Arizona filed a verified complaint on July 21, 2025, alleging the Pima County Sheriff's Department violated Arizona's public records law by failing to produce, more than two months after the request, records on the department's contacts with federal immigration officials. The suit followed Sheriff Chris Nanos's public statement that his department "would not assist in enforcing federal law," even though the department had documented turning over at least 16 people to Border Patrol between January 2022 and June 2023, and had stopped tracking such contacts in June 2024, before the underlying regulation lapsed in July 2025.
