Greece holds prisoners in conditions that may be inhuman, and its police again face credible allegations of beating detainees for confessions, Europe's anti-torture committee found.
In a report published on 4 March 2026 on its January 2025 periodic visit to seven men's prisons, two women's prisons and several police facilities, the Council of Europe's anti-torture committee (CPT) found staffing 'dangerously low' at Korydallos I and Chania prisons, letting inter-prisoner violence flourish, and overcrowding such as up to five people in 8 m2 single cells at Alikarnassos, conditions it said could amount to inhuman and degrading treatment. It again received credible allegations that Hellenic Police officers slapped, punched and kicked detainees, often to obtain confessions, and found that several deaths in police custody could have been prevented.
