Mexican soldiers raped an elderly Indigenous woman who then died, and investigators closed the case on stereotypes the President repeated, the Inter-American Court ruled.
In a judgment notified on 16 December 2025, the Inter-American Court of Human Rights held Mexico internationally responsible for the 2007 rape, which it classed as torture, of an elderly Indigenous woman by members of the Mexican Army in Veracruz; she died after about ten hours of seeking medical care, at a hospital with no interpreters for her language. The Court found the criminal investigation was closed prematurely without exhausting lines of inquiry and rested on ethnic, age and gender stereotypes that senior officials, including the then-President, repeated publicly, and that her family faced pressure and intimidation to drop their search for justice.
