DC Inspector General finds a decade of systemic crime-data misclassification at MPD, with no independent review unit since 2013

A July 28, 2026 DC Office of Inspector General report found systemic weaknesses in how the Metropolitan Police Department classified and reported crimes going back roughly a decade, including the 2013 elimination of an independent crime-review unit, weak controls in the RMS/Mark43 records system, and employees describing supervisor pressure on classifications. The report did not conclude leadership intentionally manipulated data.
