GPS/inertial guidance tail kit for unguided bombs (Boeing)

Weapon system · United States · Weapon system

The Joint Direct Attack Munition (JDAM) is a Boeing-made tail kit that bolts GPS and inertial guidance onto unguided bombs such as the 2,000-pound MK-84, turning them into all-weather guided weapons. The US Air Force paid an average of $21,000 per kit in FY2021, and Defense News put the range at $25,000 to $84,000 depending on order size when Boeing won a $7.5B production contract in May 2024. JDAMs are central to Israel's bombing of Gaza. Amnesty International found JDAM parts in two October 2023 strikes on family homes in Deir al-Balah that killed 43 civilians. Bellingcat documented MK-80 series bombs with JDAM kits in the July 2024 Khadija school strike and in the 2025 demolition of at least seven Gaza City high-rises after evacuation orders. In September 2026 Amnesty reported JDAM components at a Tehran strike site from the 2026 US-Israeli war on Iran, saying the strikes may amount to war crimes.
