Italian state arms maker; naval guns on Israel's Gaza-shelling warships

Company · Italy · Organization

Leonardo is Italy's state-controlled arms manufacturer. The Italian Treasury holds 30.2%, and Lorenzo Mariani has been CEO since May 7, 2026, succeeding former minister Roberto Cingolani. Its OTO Melara 76mm naval guns arm Israel's Sa'ar 4.5, Sa'ar 5 and Sa'ar 6 warships; according to AFSC, a Sa'ar 6 was used in combat for the first time on Oct 16, 2023, in the attacks on Gaza. Israel's 30 M-346 'Lavi' jet trainers, bought from Leonardo in 2012 for about $1B, train the pilots who fly Israel's bombing missions. Leonardo assembles F-35 wings and services the jets at Cameri for Lockheed Martin, but told shareholders in May 2026 that this work goes to third countries 'but NOT to the State of Israel', so this map draws no F-35 link from Leonardo to Israel. UN Special Rapporteur Francesca Albanese's July 2025 report notes that BNP Paribas lent $410M to Leonardo and other firms supplying Israel. In H1 2026 Leonardo reported €10.0B in revenues and a €58.6B order backlog.
