Arms exporter to Israel; home of Leonardo

Country · Italy · Country

Italy's government claimed in 2023 and again in October 2024 that shipments of weapons to Israel were blocked, but official figures tell a different story. In the EU's annual arms-export report, Italy declared €9.96M in military-export licences for Israel in 2023 and €16.21M in actual arms exports, deliveries running ahead of new licences. ISTAT foreign-trade data reviewed by The New Arab show €817,536 of 'weapons and ammunition' exported to Israel in October and November 2023 alone, and Il Fatto Quotidiano, citing ISTAT, reported about €5.8M of arms, ammunition and parts in 2024. Italy is home to Leonardo, whose naval guns arm Israel's warships; Leonardo says its F-35 work at Cameri is not destined for Israel. The UN Commission of Inquiry in September 2025 found that Israel committed genocide in Gaza and urged all states to stop arms transfers that may be used in genocidal acts; Rome's partial, opaque restrictions have not ended the flow of parts and ammunition.
