Roberto Cingolani

Former Leonardo CEO; ran Italy's arms maker through the genocide

Former Leonardo CEO · Person

Roberto Cingolani was Italy's minister for ecological transition in Mario Draghi's government from February 2021, then CEO and general manager of Leonardo, the Italian state-backed arms maker, from May 2023 until May 2026, when Lorenzo Mariani, nominated by the Italian Treasury as shareholder, replaced him. From green transition to gun turrets, his tenure at Leonardo spanned the genocide in Gaza. Francesca Albanese's July 2025 UN report identified Leonardo among corporations aiding Israel that 'may be embedded in an economy of genocide', and Leonardo's 'ongoing supply of equipment for Israel's military has attracted controversy'. Investors rewarded the war years: Leonardo's share price rose 234% between October 2023 and July 2025. Italy's sales of arms and ammunition to Israel amounted to €13.7M a year, according to the magazine Altreconomia. The UN Commission of Inquiry concluded in September 2025 that Israel committed genocide in Gaza.
