Amazon

Tech conglomerate; AWS runs Israel's military cloud under Project Nimbus

Company · United States · Organization

Amazon is the U.S. retail and cloud giant founded by Jeff Bezos, and Amazon Web Services (AWS), its cloud division, is where part of Israel's war is stored. With Google, AWS holds Project Nimbus, the $1.2B (NIS 4B) Israeli government cloud contract that covers Israel's military. +972 Magazine and Local Call reported in Aug 2024 that AWS gives Israel's Military Intelligence Directorate a server farm to store masses of intelligence, which one source called 'endless storage'. A 2025 Guardian, +972 and Local Call investigation found Nimbus bars Amazon and Google from cutting off Israel's access, even when Israel breaks their policies. UN Special Rapporteur Francesca Albanese's July 2025 report says Amazon, Microsoft and Alphabet give Israel 'virtually government-wide access' to cloud and AI. Amazon reported $382.1B in net sales for H1 2026, and its Q2 profit was boosted by a $53.4B gain mainly from its Anthropic stake. Bezos held about 8.8% (879M shares) in Aug 2026, and BlackRock about 6.6%.

Nimbus and the intelligence server farm

AWS and Google won Project Nimbus, Israel's $1.2B government cloud contract, in 2021. +972 and Local Call reported in August 2024 that AWS supplies Israel's Military Intelligence Directorate with a server farm 'to store masses of intelligence information', 'the endless storage' in one source's words, which provided supplementary information before airstrikes, some of which killed civilians. Who Profits names AWS as a main cloud provider to the Israel Ministry of Defense, the military, Rafael and Israel Aerospace Industries.

No exit clause

Leaked Nimbus terms reported by The Guardian, +972 and Local Call in October 2025 bar Amazon from suspending Israel's access and set up a coded 'winking' payment to warn Israel of foreign data demands. When Microsoft cut off part of Unit 8200's Azure use, +972's sources said the unit planned to move the data to AWS. AWS opened its Tel Aviv region in 2023 and plans to invest $7.2B in Israel through 2037.
