Steve Irwin

Former congressional candidate, Pennsylvania 12th (UDP-backed, lost)

Former congressional candidate, Pennsylvania 12th (UDP-backed, lost) · Person · United States

Steve Irwin was the favoured candidate of the United Democracy Project (UDP), AIPAC's super PAC, in the May 2022 Democratic primary for Pennsylvania's 12th District. UDP, registered with the FEC as an independent-expenditure super PAC in January 2022, spent about $660,000 supporting Irwin and about $2M attacking state Representative Summer Lee, nearly $2.7M in all, according to FactCheck.org's review of FEC filings. The race was one of UDP's first tests of direct spending in Democratic primaries. Lee narrowly won, then took the seat in November 2022 and held it in 2024. Irwin's defeat was an early sign that AIPAC money could not always stop progressive critics of Israel; two years later the same super PAC succeeded against Jamaal Bowman and Cori Bush.
