Energean founder and CEO; sells Israel the gas that runs its grid
Energean founder and CEO · Person
Mathios Rigas founded the oil and gas producer Energean and is its CEO, holding about 8.34% of the company. Energean bought the Karish and Tanin gas fields off Israel's coast for $148M in 2016 and sells their gas to Israeli power producers; Israel supplied about 65% of group revenue in H1 2026 and more than 70% of output. Group revenue was $1.73B in 2025. Israel's Ministry of Energy ordered production halted for 41 days, from 28 February to 9 April 2026, the opening weeks of the US–Israeli war on Iran, after which output 'recovered strongly'. In H1 2026 Energean's free cash flow rose 35% to $250M and profit after tax 45%, and it signed a ~$1.4B gas deal with the Sorek power station, which the company calls 'a nationally significant energy infrastructure project'. Energean's earnings are tied directly to keeping Israel's grid running through its assault on Gaza and its wars on Lebanon and Iran.
