Former U.S. Representative, New York 16th District (UDP-opposed, lost 2024) · Person · United States
Jamaal Bowman, a member of the progressive 'Squad' and a frequent critic of US support for Israel's genocide in Gaza, was challenged in the June 2024 Democratic primary for New York's 16th District by Westchester County Executive George Latimer. The United Democracy Project, AIPAC's super PAC, spent almost $9.9M opposing Bowman and nearly $4.8M supporting Latimer, according to FactCheck.org's review of FEC filings, making it the most expensive House primary in US history. Latimer won 58.6% to 41.4%, and Bowman became the first Squad member to lose a primary. In February 2025 he launched Built to Win PAC to back progressive candidates, including against politicians who support Benjamin Netanyahu. His defeat is the clearest case of AIPAC money removing a critic of the war from Congress.
