Buyer of Israel's largest-ever gas export deal; gatekeeper of Rafah
Country · Egypt · Country
Egypt, under Abdel Fattah el-Sisi, signed Israel's largest gas deal mid-genocide: on 7 August 2025 the Leviathan partners (Chevron, NewMed, Ratio) agreed to sell Egypt about 130 bcm of gas through 2040, worth $35B. Netanyahu approved it in December 2025, boasting that it "greatly strengthens Israel's status as a regional energy power." At Rafah, Israel seized the Gaza side of the crossing on 7 May 2024 and aid stopped. Before that, per Middle East Eye and NPR, Hala, a firm owned by Sisi-appointed Sinai tycoon Ibrahim al-Organi, charged fleeing Palestinians at least $5,000 per adult and $2,500 per child, which a source told NPR could not happen without Egyptian security approval. Charge: buying the gas, selling the exit.
