Buyer of Israeli Barak MX and close military partner
Country · Cyprus · Country
Cyprus is a close military partner of Israel in the eastern Mediterranean and one of the first EU buyers of IAI's Barak MX interceptor system, whose initial deliveries arrived in December 2024 as part of a shift away from Russian equipment. The contract value has not been disclosed. EU data show Cypriot arms export licences to Israel of €1M or less in 2024, and AOAV counts €97,000 of small-arms licences in 2014–2022. The island's role is less about export volume than about integration: Israel Aerospace Industries, a state-owned weapons manufacturer whose systems are used in Gaza, now anchors Cyprus's air shield. Whether the money for Barak MX flowed during the period the UN Commission of Inquiry described as genocide remains to be confirmed.
