Colombia

Former top coal supplier to Israel; banned exports 2024–2026; ban reversed by new government

Country · Colombia · Country

Colombia is the contrast case, and the cautionary one. Per UN Special Rapporteur Francesca Albanese's report, Colombian coal was 60% of Israel's coal imports in 2023–24, shipped mostly by Glencore (Cerrejón) and Drummond. President Gustavo Petro cut diplomatic ties in May 2024, calling Israel's leader "genocidal", banned coal exports by Decree 1047 in August 2024 and closed the loopholes in 2025. Industry estimated the ban cost $200M a year. Even so, 650,000 tonnes left Puerto Drummond for Israel in 2025. In August 2026 the new government of Abelardo de la Espriella announced that exports could resume, and Cerrejón moved to win back the market. Charge pending: relapse.
